1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.



The use of the high key lighting around Tom Cruise in this image connotes that the room he is in is all high tech and futuristic cause of how brightly lit the room is. Furthermore, the use of him wearing all black connotes that he's doing something sneaky and stealthy as the colour black usually shows mystery or death. The use of the wide shot also shows the whole background and the body placement that Tom Cruise is in which shows him balancing his weight from off the floor with a rope holding him up from the floor which could connote in this image an intense moment in time. The use of the juxtaposition between the room being white and Tom Cruise wearing black makes him look in the image more sharper which can show that everyone's eyes should be on him and what he's doing. 

2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

The Conjuring is a Horror film which has a lot of low key lighting in it to make the whole aspect of the movie more scary and more harder to see the characters in the dark creating that affect of fear. The use of the actors facial expressions throughout the whole movie is of seriousness and fear as the whole movie is based on the paranormal and ghosts in the dark. Throughout the whole movie there is a lot of high angle and low angle shots to make the audience feel more afraid for the characters in the movie (using a  low angle shot for the actors in the movie to show how insignificant and small they are compared to the paranormal) whereas for the spooky or scary bits in the movie there are high angle shots to show the dominance and power of how strong the evil and malevolent forces are. There are a lot of settings used in the Conjuring but one in particular is the house that the Hodgson family live in which is a spooky and old house which barely has any high key lighting in the house throughout the whole movie to connote just how spooky and mysterious and evil the house is and that no one should be living in there. Furthermore, a prop that is used in the film is a crucifix which could symbolise religion and protection from any evil spirits. 

On the other hand, The Inbetweeners is a British Comedy film which has a lot of high key lighting throughout the whole film to connote that its a funny film with loads of laughs and tears and not a scary film. The use of the facial expressions of the actors in the films is just being immature with foolish smiles on there faces with no seriousness at all in there personalities and just having a laugh and having a good time with each other. The use of the props such as the guitar that Will uses in the film each and individually have there own way of making people laugh as whatever they hold in the movie either shames them or it ends up breaking in there hands which makes the audience laugh either way.

Editing: blog task

  Your final analytical blog task is to find a film or television clip on YouTube that you feel has been edited in a distinctive way and write a 750 word analysis of the clip. Use as much media language as you can - and remember to  highlight it . Try and use the key words we've learned for editing if possible.
