Editing: blog task

Your final analytical blog task is to find a film or television clip on YouTube that you feel has been edited in a distinctive way and write a 750 word analysis of the clip.

Use as much media language as you can - and remember to highlight it. Try and use the key words we've learned for editing if possible. You can also use any other aspects of film language that we have studied in your analyis - just like the in-class clips where we discuss how editing combines with cinematography, sound or mise-en-scene.

0:00-1:35 minutes of this clip.

In the beginning of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the scene starts off with dramatic tension building music with a close up shot of a persons gun and their hand coming slowly toward it in a slow cautious way to show to the audience that something is about to happen and that the use of prop of the gun can connote to the audience that there is danger and violence coming up. 5-30 seconds into the clip, the pace and use of the editing starts and begin to build up slowly introducing us to the 3 pair of characters in the scene with each and individual clip showing a close up shot of each and everyone of there faces with two of the characters (The Bad and the Ugly) equally showing the same amounts of level of fear and seriousness with The Good (Clint Eastwood) looking calmly and expressionlessly at the two of them while having a cigar in his mouth. The use of the deliberate medium close up shot of Clint Eastwood's face with the cigar in his mouth forces the audience to take notice of it to connote that he smug and calm in the situation that he is facing off with the two of the other characters there with him which can be further interpreted as he has got a bit of self confidence in himself even in a very serious situation as he is faced in now.

30 secs-1:15 minute into the clip, as the music begins to gradually increase in volume and tempo the pace of the editing gets even more faster beginning to show new shots of the characters such as their belt buckles and hands twitching and getting more uncomfortably closer to their guns which could connote to the audience that they are having a stand off or about to go into a fight with one another. The use of the medium close of shot of the belt buckle showing one of the characters hands touching the ammo around their belt slowly can create meaning and interpretation to the audience that they are about to witness a shootout and that they should be prepare themselves with the inevitable of some kind of violence or bloodshed about to happen next.

1:15- 1:35 minutes towards the ending of the clip, a lot of various shots and pace of editing dramatically changes all due to the non-diegetic music speeding up and reaching towards the end of its tune as we are introduced to more new shots such as really close up shots of the characters eyes with each and everyone of them squinting deep and narrowing their eyes to build up the suspense and show that they are having a standoff with none of them blinking which can show to the audience that the characters are trying to hide their fears from one another so it does not make them look weak or scared of what is about to happen next.

Furthermore, the use of the music building up and match of the beat makes the shots begin to change lighting fast as the use of every beat drop in the tune of the music makes the shot switch and change to the next character to try and catch each and everyone of their feelings and facial expressions in the moment so then the audience feel like they are part of and involved in the scene and feel like they are as well part of the standoff that these 3 men are having with each other.

The Mise-en-Scene (CLAMPS) in this clip is useful as the use of Costume in this clip helps us interpret this scene better as they are wearing old fashioned cowboy clothes with cowboy boot heels to show to the audience that what they are watching is something that was set back in time during thew cowboy era. In addition to this the use of the Lighting which is high key connotes to the audience that they can see everything from this clip as the shots in this scene are so zoomed in that we can see the sweat dripping down (Makeup) from the characters (The Ugly) face which helps deeper bring understanding to the audience that he is scared but trying hard not to show it. The use of props such as the ammo and old gun pistols in the scene helps to show that it is set in the old western days as during those times the guns back then were not as well and advanced as the guns we have today in the 21st Century. The use of the Setting is actually really key in this scene as it is set around a graveyard which can convey deeper meaning to the audience that death may be around as in graveyards there are graves which gives off the message of death which we can link back to the clip which can give the audience a secret message or sign that someone might die in the clip which also adds up to the suspense and tension.
