 Y12 exam - Media Paper 2: Learner response


Create a new blogpost on your Media Coursework blog called 'Media Paper 2 learner response' and work through the following tasks:

1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to). 

WWW: This is a very impressive assessment: top level for Q1 and some excellent points in Q2.

EBI: You now need to add the clarity and question focus for Q2. The opening about Walter Presents didn't really answer the question you needed more focus on Hall. We will practice this!

Total: 20 = C 

2) Read the mark scheme for this exam carefully, paying particular attention to the 'indicative content' for each question. Firstly, focus on the unseen question and identify two aspects of the poster that you could have written about in your answer.

Q1

* The representation of youth as diverse in terms of gender and race 

 * The link between genre and stereotypes – the representation of victim in the thriller/crime drama.

3) Look at the indicative content for Q1 again and make a note of any theories or examples of media terminology you could have used in your answer.

Some media terminology I did not use for the Riverdale unseen poster was the visual codes and iconography such as the use of props to denote the narrative and genre elements.

4) Now focus on the TV 25-marker. Read this exemplar response for the TV question and pick out three arguments, phrases or theories from the essay that you could use in a future question on Capital and Deutschland 83.

* The key aspects of the relevant theory of encoding/decoding: hegemonic/negotiated/oppositional readings, framing, conditions of consumption

* The way in which Hall’s theory encouraged a new way of considering the relationship between media and audiences, suggesting that meaning isn’t fixed (in the context of either encoder or decoder)

* The understanding of Hall’s theory as a challenge to views of the passive audience

5) Finally, identify three things you need to revise for Media Paper 2 before your next assessment or mock exam.

* I need to revise more and put more determination into my exams.

* I need to make more flashcards on the media theorist.

* I need to practise time management in the exam so I have enough time to go back and check my answers properly.

  1) Find a distinctive  still image  and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson. The use of the high key lighting around Tom Cruise in this image connotes that the room he is in is all high tech and futuristic cause of how brightly lit the room is. Furthermore, the use of him wearing all black connotes that he's doing something sneaky and stealthy as the colour black usually shows mystery or death. The use of the wide shot also shows the whole background and the body placement that Tom Cruise is in which shows him balancing his weight from off the floor with a rope holding him up from the floor which could connote in this image an intense moment in time.   Find the  opening sequence  to a film or TV drama of your choice on YouTube and e mbed the video in a blogpost called 'Cinematography blog tasks'.  1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence.  Highlight  your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9GYMfLcnDY  - Friends Opening.  In the Friends opening scene there is a wide range of medium shots and establishing shots to show the viewers the surroundings of where the characters are and what they are doing.
