Sound analysis: blog tasks

  1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film: Diegetic and non-diegetic sound Parallel and contrapuntal sound Sound bridges Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip: Music Dialogue Voiceover Sound effects You also need to  highlight  or put in  bold  any use of media language. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0x7qtBTrGA The use of contrapuntal sound in this clip from the Korean film 'Parasite' makes this scene so much more better and interesting as there is no dialogue or no voiceovers or any sort of sound effects in the scene at all there is just the sound of classical music playing while everyone is killing and ripping each others body parts out. This can make the audience or viewers watching the film feel a bit confused and uncomfortable about the sound as it doesn't doesn't match the scene at...

Sound video feedback and learner response

1) Type up your feedback from your teacher. *The opening is superb-edited to the beat, clearly works as parallel and a good selection of clips. * Parallel section worked brilliantly - fantastic pace to the soundtrack and the video editing. Some felt almost edited to the beat which shows how parallel the Music and images were. 2) Type up your feedback from fellow students - you can summarise key points if several students give you similar feedback. WWW: *Music matches with first few videos, good p arallel. *Brilliant action scenes good editing- edited unclear contrapuntal, fit too well. *Good use of parallel sound. *Contrapuntal fit  well with tom and Jerry EBI: The contrapuntal section didn't work quite so effectively - two different ideas but neither as quite flited as a contrapuntal effect. I wonder if the music didn't lend itself to contrapuntal video? Unclear what the contrapuntal is. 3) Now reflect on your work and write your own evaluation of your video. Write a 'Wh...

Blog feedback and learner response

WWW: You’ve made an absolutely brilliant start to A Level Media on the coursework side – well done! Your blog is fully up to date and your reflection on the mise-en-scene recreation is exactly what I want to see in an LR task – so detailed and thoughtful both in terms of your technical work and also the importance of mise-en-scene. Keep up the good work! EBI: Your mise-en-scene analytical task offers a good level of detail which is so important at A Level. Your film poster work is weaker in this area so just make sure you are writing in depth and detail for analysis tasks moving forward. Finally, it is also important to focus on written English so think about how you organise your writing (sentences, spelling/grammar, paragraphs etc.) Reflect on your first month of Film & TV Language.  What aspect of Film & TV language have you most enjoyed studying? I think the most I've enjoyed for Film and TV Language so far has been the recreation scene that we had to create as i...

Lighting blog tasks

Image
  1) Still image analysis Look at the still images on slides 33-37 of the Film Language Powerpoint linked above. Copy the images into your blog and answer the following questions for  each  image: Identify examples of  high  and  low-key  lighting. Say which depict  top ,  back  or  under lighting . What  effects  are created by the lighting in each image? *More top/undergoing light. Top light to see more of the persons facial expression and under lighting   * Low-key lighting: Strong contrast between dark than light. Makes the image look more mysterious and raises questions of who this person is. * No filler (to soften any shadows) lights used.  *Low-key lighting/soft lighting: can see a lot of her face which connotes to her facial expressions that we can see more clearly of which is expressionless. Low-key lighting- harsh contrast between light and dark as in the image there is more dark than lighting bein...

Media 2 Coursework blog

  1) Find a distinctive  still image  and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson. The use of the high key lighting around Tom Cruise in this image connotes that the room he is in is all high tech and futuristic cause of how brightly lit the room is. Furthermore, the use of him wearing all black connotes that he's doing something sneaky and stealthy as the colour black usually shows mystery or death. The use of the wide shot also shows the whole background and the body placement that Tom Cruise is in which shows him balancing his weight from off the floor with a rope holding him up from the floor which could connote in this image an intense moment in time. The use of the juxtaposition between the room being white and Tom Cruise wearing black makes him look in the image more sharper which can show that everyone's eyes should be on him and what he's doing.  2) Find  TWO  film or TV extracts on YouTube from ...

Mise-en-scene video feedback and learner response

  1) Type up your feedback from your teacher in full. *Great choice of  scene- perfect for a recreation (aside from the language perhaps!) *Setting is good- perhaps you could have added some set dressing in the background to reflect the table being overturned? *Performances are good! Expression + movement a big part of mise-en-scene. *Not mise-en-scene but you needed a sound effect at then end! 2) Type up a summary of the feedback you have had from the rest of the class - bullet points is fine. WWW *The acting was believable- they felt in tune with your characters roles. *Good actor placement and camera shots on the actors. *Good display of emotions and speech. *Good costume.-suit, blue shirt. *Gun prop. *Camerawork. *Actor placement. *Remembered their lines.  *The scream at the end. *Good setting. *Facial expressions on point. *Camera shot zoom in was accurate to the original. *The accent. *The camera movement was spot on. EBI *Little bit more emotion behind the acting. ...
